Mont Saint Michel
Off the coast of France, this island was only accessible at low tide. There is now a 1.8 mile causeway to it that you can ride a tram or walk. We walked.
The township is at the bottom of island and the Abbey is at the top.
The tide was high when we arrived.
The cloister of the abbey and its inner courtyard.
By the time we left the tide was out and we were able to walk at the base of the island.
We walked the 350 steps up to the Abbey.
Convicts were used to turn the Treadwheel crane, walking inside the wheel. Possibly there were two for each wheel and the estimated load capacity was three tons. The diameter of the crane wheels is 14 feet.
