The Caledonian market opened in 1855 and consisted of the central clock tower, enclosures for animals, slaughterhouses, sales arenas, administrative offices and four public houses, one standing at each corner of the complex. The cattle market was closed in the 1930s.
This garden sits over the Elizabeth Line and almost exactly on the Meridian line and the planting are arranged according to which hemisphere they are from with Asian plants such as bamboos to the east, and plants such as ferns from the Americas to the west.
